A small but very effective wine press from Jaffrey Manufacturing is their table model. It is small in size, which makes it easier to manage and store. The cast iron arm and screw will have no problems crushing your grapes into juice. When pressing grapes for fresh juice or when making wine you should crush the grapes prior to pressing, but it is not required. Just as if you were pressing apples (which must be ground up into pumace), the more crushing you do on the front end will yield more juice on the back end. If you are interested in dabbling in pressing grapes, but don’t have an interest in producing a large volume, then the Jaffrey Table Wine Press is the fruit press for you.

Like Ice Wines, Ice Cider is now beginning to make its mark within the Cider world. Eden Ice Cider company has been working with US regulators and is now one of the first, if not the first, licensed producer of Ice Cider’s in the United States. The process of making Ice Cider and Wine starts with pressing frozen fruit, called Cryoextraction. It sounds like many producers also press fresh apples and grapes, then freeze the cider or juice to arrive at a similar destination. Either way the sugars are concentrated during the freezing process, thus driving a higher alcohol content, which makes this beverage a “wine” rather than a cider. If you are interested in making homemade grape juice, then a small grape press is a necessity. Jaffrey manufacturing has built a small yet very stable wine press that fit’s on top of your table. You can then easily crush your grapes to yield some wonderful fresh grape juice. If you are interested in making your own wines, this press is great for smaller batches, but can become time consuming if you are looking to press a large volume of juice.

The Weston Grape Press is a great press for making home made grape juice and wines. There is an adaptable Weston Fruit Grinder as well, if you are interested in pressing  apples. The Weston Wine Press will not crush and press whole apples, a grinder is needed if that is your intention. There are many varieties of grapes you can press depending on what you are trying to accomplish. For fresh grape juice you may want to cook the grapes before pressing. If you are making your own home made wine, then you can press the fresh grapes straight from the vine.

The Jaffrey Wine Press is a vintage style grape press used to make homemade grape juice and wines. Last week marked the beginning of this year’s grape harvest. From the Wahluke Slope in Mattawa to the Walla Walla Valley, grapes are being harvesting. Most varieties of grapes that are harvested first are Chardonnay, Savignon Blanc, and Merlot. According to an article from Wine Press Northwest, the grapes are about 9 days ahead of last year. Sales of Washington State wines have increased 9.1% by value over the past year. This data is from a recent Nielson report for the period of July 2008 to July 2009. The 9.1% growth figure is twice as much as total wine sales, which say a 4.7% increase by value. Sales by volume is also up by 6.4% which is almost 3 times as large as overall wine sales by volume which grew by 2.4% over the same time period. Washington State contains over 32,000 acres of planted grapes with varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Reisling, Merlot, and Syrah leading the way as far as total acres planted.

The Weston wine press is a great value for the quality of material and construction of the press. Weston makes a ratchet style press, so there is no cross arm to support the screw, rather the screw is anchored at the base of the press through the middle of the press where the fruit tub is placed. This is a great press for grapes and other soft fruits, but I don’t think it’s best suited if you are making cider with apples. It can be difficult to line the tub with a mesh bag, although you could use cheesecloth. But for grapes, the Weston wine press is great as the grapes don’t have as much pulp and excess materials to be filtered out when pressed. You can easily find the Weston Grape press for under $300 as well, which makes it affordable.

The Weston Wine Press is perfect for the family looking to make homemade wines or grape juice. The Weston Wine Press is a ratchet type press. To work the Press you load your grapes into the press, preferably with a nylon or cheesecloth filtering bag, and then place the wood blocks on top of the grapes. You then begin the ratchet down the wood blocks putting pressure on the grapes. The grape juice will begin to flow out of the bottom of the fruit press when enough pressure is applied. The Weston Fruit Press is a great addition to any home and  can be enjoyed by the entire family.
